After the president of the Kurdish region in Iraq declared plans for a referendum on independence last Thursday, one of his biggest obstacles has been the response of key foreign powers.
Although the US has publicly advocated a unified Iraq, President Barzani now expects neither “active assistance or resistance” from the US or Turkey.
