Ben Irwin More than 200,000 people have been living under siege for the last three years in the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor, caught in a brutal war involving ISIS, rebel groups, Syrian government forces, and at times, Russian and American jets.
ISIS encircled the city in 2014. They closed the roads, captured weapons, kidnapped civilians, and cut off power and communications. Families began to starve. Medical care all but disappeared. Reportedly there was only one functioning ambulance left in the entire city as the siege intensified.
The siege of Deir ez-Zor was finally broken last week. ISIS is being pushed back in Syria, as they are in Iraq. A key route in and out of Deir ez-Zor has been opened—and your love is already on the ground.
When you showed up for Aleppo late last year, you helped provide five mobile medical clinics for the people of that besieged city. While the bombs fell, destroying everything in sight, you made sure embattled families got the care they needed to hold on and hold out.
The frontlines are moving, and four of these clinics are moving with them—going where the need is greatest.
This week, the same four mobile clinics that served in Aleppo began offering medical care, vaccinations, and medicine for 2,000 people inside Deir ez-Zor. Doctors can even perform certain surgeries in these clinics.
This is the first medical care many families in Deir ez-Zor have gotten in years.
In addition, the clinic staff brought food, diapers, and sanitary pads for families inside Deir ez-Zor.
